8 years and counting, policemen cannot move into 877 flats

When it comes to housing, Delhi Police personnel seem to be an unhappy lot. According to the Land and Building department of the Delhi Police, the overall housing satisfaction level of Delhi Police personnel is just 18.6 per cent — that among lower-rung officers is 10.65 per cent. The department says there is just one flat available for every 100-odd constable-rank personnel. This, when 877 flats in Rohini Sector 26, bought by the Delhi Police from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in 2005 are lying vacant, eight years after purchase.

According to sources, 877 two-bedroom flats were bought by Delhi Police for Rs 36 crore in 2005. But no one has taken possession till now. The reason: DDA has still not provided drinking water and sewage system — two basic necessities — in these flats.

Sources said the DDA had promised that they would provide the facilities by 2009 and personnel would be able to take possession thereafter, but nothing has been done yet, despite several reminders and requests from the police.

“The flats are lying vacant because they do not even have basic facilities. The flats can accommodate nearly 900 families. One one hand, we crib about housing satisfaction levels being very low, especially among subordinate personnel, and, on the other hand, government assets are going to waste,” a senior police officer said.
