Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 1513 hrs Maharashtra government has drawn up an ambitious USD 60 billion (Rs 2.25 lakh crore) action plan for makeover of Mumbai, aimed to convert India's commercial capital into a global financial hub.

"Our government is serious on transforming Mumbai into a global financial centre and the plan is aimed at transforming the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) into a modern urban centre", he said in an interview on the eve of his Democratic Front government completing three years.

"Call it the 2020 vision if you like. The Rs 2.25 lakh crore-plan would be implemented during the next 10 years", he said.

Areas adjoining Mumbai, like Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar and even part of Raigad district, are included in the MMR.

"Just developing Mumbai will not do. There need to be more townships in the adjoining regions. The objective is that people should not congest the city. People crowd Mumbai because they go to office or business here. If we provide the same facilities outside, they will not congest the city", he said.

Deshmukh said, "Mumbai makeover plan is aimed at creating world-class infrastructure and to set up an integrated urban transport system using existing suburban rail, ambitious metro rail system, hovercraft, sealink and road connectivity."

For the integrated urban transport system, a unified metropolitan authority called Urban Transport Management Authority would be set up to bring about an integrated fare structure and linkages among various modes of transport.

The operational integration would attempt at coordinated routine and scheduling rail, rapid transit system, bus services and water transport besides unification of fare structure, rationalising redundant services and coordinated public information system.

By this integrated approach, a commuter can buy a single ticket at the starting point and use different modes of transports such as suburban rail, metro rail, waterways and road transport to reach final destination.

As part of the project, Mumbai city would have nine metro corridors, which would be mostly elevated connecting various suburban points upgrading the three railway suburb network, providing Worli-Nariman point sealink, East Island Freeway and waterway between Borivali-Nariman Point.

60 billion dollar investment is just huge. Indian financial capital people are really hardworking and intelligent. It is good to have a great infrastructure in India. Our democracy has more freedom than many other if our economy becomes more energetic with added infrastructure it is the best thing ever happening.

It is really amazing that none of the infrastructure projects like Bombay underground Metro Railways and modernisation of Bombay airport started.

Educating the public in civic sense, civic duties and pride is conspicuous by its absence in the article. Hope it is not missing from the actual makeover plan. No amount of investment will change the impression of the city, if people defecate and urinate in the open; chew paan and spit at every nook and cranny; dispose of litter anywhere with impunity. One other major factor is traffic sense by all road users including pedestrians, not just vehicles. Perhaps all current drivers’ licences should lapse until the drivers pass a more stringent driving test. This could include a written test and the practical test that covers lane discipline and use of mirrors, manoeuvres such as parking etc.

Approach is great by the Indian GOVT to convert Mumbai into world class city. But to make this DREAM come true the GOVT has to start educating people about cities cleanliness and conservation of public places through different mass media. Also, we Mumbaikar's love Aamchi Mumbai then it is our time to think responsibly and sensibly to support the GOVT and the people from our city to contribute to the great cause. Just look at the other countries how clean their streets are and the public places. It is not that hard to imagine and responsibility today if you love Aamchi Mumbai. I do believe Aamchi Mumbai is truly a great city no matter what are the obstacles

It seems that successive governments are making promises for the sake of breaking them. The recent Mumbai Metro plans seems to be stuck and there has been no news on when the construction would start. The bhoomi pujan done by PM was probably just a publicity exercise. I have been hearing for past 10 years about bandra nariman point sea link. But till now we have not even done the first phase. The politicians across political spectrum do not have the courage of freeing up the airport land so that Mumbai airport could be modernised. When these small things cannot be done then why are they making promises. We as citizens are in a catch 22 situation as whichever party is voted in, there wont be any sort of change..

About Three years ago i made statement "Mumbai is the International city", I hope you move very fast because the new generation want everything now this second not tomorow. Sitting on billions of dollar in treasury will not solve the infrastructure problem. The job must be created thru development.Rajesh Dharia

I am seeing lots of project being announced but none of them started due to protest, morchas, and agitation or some other problem. Other than renaming Bombay to Mumbai, i don't see any project coming through successfully.Bombay will not progress because regionalistic buffoons like ShivSainik goons and corrupt/criminals congressi will not allow outsiders to leave in peace.Mafia dons, builders, murderers, and rapists are running government along with congress.

$60bn??THAT MUST MAKE THE GREEDY INDIAN POLITICIANS RSTLESS, THEIR HANDS MUST BE ITCHING TO PUT THEIR HANDS ON THESE AMOUNT OF MONEYBY THE WAY, CORRUPT POLITICIANS IN SHANGHAI/CHINA CAN BE HANGED FOR CORRUPTION. IN INDIA IT IS NOT SO.SO THE INDIAN PEOPLE CAN ONLY DREAM OF TURNING MUMBAI IN TO SHANGHAI. AT THE MOMENT MUMBAI IS THE DIRTIEST CITY OF INDIA, EVEN THE BASIC CLEANLINESS IS NOT MAINTAINED BY THE CORPORATES OF MUMBAI, HOW THEY GOING TO HANDLE AND MAINTAIN GOOD CLEAN ROADS AND SHINY BUILDINGS???
