



New Delhi, Aug 11: India has an estimated 5.2 million HIV infected persons, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday. “According to the annual sentinel surveillance report, there are an estimated 5.2 million HIV infected persons,” minister for health and family welfare Anbumani Ramadoss said in a written reply.
57% BPL households
Only 57% of the below poverty line (BPL) are covered under the targeted public distribution system (TPDS), the House was informed.
A study of 18 main states by the programme evaluation organisation of the Planning Commission has stated “though the off-take per household has shown some improvement under TPDS, yet only about 57% of BPL households are covered in terms of off-take,” agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said.
Drug policy for poor
An annual allocation of Rs 3,000 crore for health insurance for the poor will enable 5 crore families to be entitled for free treatment worth Rs 35,000 every year. Chemical and fertiliser minister Ram Vilas Paswan said the implementation of the new policy would not cause a huge burden for the exchequer.
