4 exposed to radiation at Rajasthan n-plant

In the second such incident in a month, four workers at Rawatbhata Atomic Power Station in Rajasthan were exposed to harmful doses of leaked tritium radiation on July 19. Two persons were exposed to similar radiation on June 29.
“Some modifications were being made to the moderator system in Station 4 when a seal on the heavy water pipeline broke, leading to leakage of tritium,” said Rajasthan Atomic Power Station director C P Jhamb. He said there was no “abnormal” release of the radiation but the four workers were exposed to radiation 10 to 25 per cent above the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) Limit. Two teams from AERB and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited were sent to ascertain the circumstances leading to the leak. Their reports are awaited.
Meanwhile, maintenance work on Station 4 was completed and it was synchronised with the grid on Monday, a week after it went offline.
