For the first time in Lucknow, home scientists from across the country will gather to discuss their research work in the last two years. The occasion will be the 29th Biennial National Conference of Home Science Association of India, starting Friday. Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra, Supreme Court of India, will be the chief guest of the function.
The three-day conference, hosted by the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, will be an all-women show. Various heads of institutions including Sheela Ramchandran, Vice-Chancellor of Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore, Dr Mrunalini Devi Puar, Chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, Veena Mistry, V-C of Navrachna University, Vadodara and Prof Arnnapurna Shukla, former head of Home Science Department at BHU will participate in the conference.
Talking about the conference, Vijaylakshmi Purushothaman, president of the Home Science Association of India, said: “A lot of work has been done by home scientists across the country, which has been recognised internationally. However, home scientists are still to get their due in India. We will be focusing on the issue in the conference.”
Ila Dedhia, vice-president (Asia) of Asian Regional Association of Home Economics, who is also a part of the organising committee, said Home Science emerged as a branch of education when women were not encouraged for higher education. “Home Science allowed the women to pursue education. With time, several branches of the subject like human resources, dietetics and nutrition, textile and fashion technology, etc have become full-fledged streams,” said Dedhia.
The topics of research presentations in the conference will be on latest research work on food, nutrition and dietetics, environment, clothing and textile and human development and family studies, said Sunita Mishra, Dean and HOD of School for Home Sciences, BBAU. Around 500 researchers from across the country will present their research work at the seminar.
Prof Aparajita Chowdhury, head of the department of Behrampur University, Odisha and Prof Savita Singhal of Chaudhary Charan Singh Agriculture University, Hisar will be the key-note speakers.
