12 yrs after directive, PU plans to teach Bapu’s principles
It had first received a circular from the HRD Ministry in 1999.
Besides Gandhian Studies, the university has also made them aware about the ‘Epoch Making Scheme’ of the University Grants Commission to promote the subject, which will entail them an initial grant of Rs 10.5 lakh from the Centre of Gandhian and Peach Studies.
Recently, the university had constituted a special committee to consider the proposal of introducing Gandhian Studies as a subject at the undergraduate level. The committee pointed out the urgent need to remind the colleges to introduce this subject and create infrastructure including creation of posts for teachers in colleges.
For this, the Panjab University will issue a circular to all the affiliated colleges.
“Although the Government of India has asked for a reply about the action taken, but because of the apathy on the part of UT Administration, they (colleges) did not implement the order. In this respect, now the time has come to remind the Chandigarh Administration as well as College Managing Committees affiliated to PU to introduce the subject of Gandhian Studies at undergraduate and post-graduate levels in colleges,” read the minutes of committee meeting held on July 15.
