'12 lakh PAN holders haven't filed returns'

in December last year before the third quarter advance tax payment deadline, warned that there was no advantage of suppressing the true income or avoiding payment of income tax as “sooner or later, the information available with the income tax department will lead the department to the doors of such persons.”
Finance minister P Chidambaram had underlined the need for a non-intrusive tax administration to enable the taxpayer to file return and pay appropriate taxes, the release said, appealing to tax payers to disclose their true income and pay taxes accordingly within the current financial year.

* The income tax department is compiling a database on these evaders through a business intelligence project
* The finance ministry has set up a nodal cell and has also started online monitoring to track tax payments by such defaulters
* Revenue secretary Sumit Bose had in December, 2012 warned that sooner or later the department will be at the doors tax evaders
