Jamshedpur: BSNL’s registration drive, launched a couple of months ago for its prepaid Excel service, has kept around 1.70 lakh subscribers waiting in Jharkhand. Each subscriber has to pay Rs 200 for the SIM card and Rs 330 for a recharge coupon. BSNL general manager (mobile) Biswajit Pal told FE that the company was in the process of installing the necessary infrastructure for around 2.50 lakh mobile connections at a cost of around Rs 132 crore by March, 2005.
The Jharkhand circle, which at present has around 1.50 lakh Excel connections, comprises six secondary switching areas (SSAs) of Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Daltongunj and Dumka.
“We plan to provide connections to 1.70 lakh Excel connections by March 2005,” said Mr Pal, adding that the company would soon be launching the two add-on services of general packet radio system and multi-media messaging system. “The equipment are being tested for some time now and we would soon be launching the services commercially,” added Mr Pal.
BSNL had earlier soft-launched both the GPRS and MMS services. Says Jamshedpur SSA general manager PK Srivastav, BSNL should have infrastructure for an additional 70,000 mobile connections by February 2005.
