: Domain is a friendly name of a network address for a server or a website. If we all had to remember the network address numbers for our favourite sites, it would be a nightmare. So the DNS (Domain Naming Service) was devised. Domains are categorized by their different extensions.
The popular domain names have extensions: .com., .net and .org. These are gTLD’s (Generic Top Level Domains) and intended for companies who are trading internationally. The next top-level domains are the two letter country codes known as ccTLD’s (Country Code Top Level Domains), used to designate a country or a dependent territory.
Most countries now have their own top domains, such as .it for Italy or .fr for France. A listing of all country codes can be found on the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) website. As on date, the website has listing of 248 country codes.
The choice of which top domain to register depends on availability and the impression a company wants to give. Country-level top domains are often firmly associated with that particular country, so an international company or organisation, would like to have a .com name.
However, over 9,000,000 .com names have already been registered. So, supply is very tight and companies may have to compromise with a .net name. If a company is doing business in one country, but it also wants to appear as international as possible, it may reserve both the .com and country-level top domain versions.
A domain name can contain up to 67 characters. This 67 character limit includes the “.” (dot) and the top level domain. So in the case of a “.com.in”, for instance, a company may be able to specify up to 61 characters for the company. This is quite adequate. Opening of .in shall allow companies to get the name of their choice. India has done well to start .in registration and it is a boon to companies who were not able to get the names of their choice earlier and also for Indian companies.
