Last week saw the release of the year's most-awaited Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh-starrer Goliyon Ki Raasleela-Ram-leela. The film brought back Sanjay Leela Bhansali as a director after a gap of nearly three years. His last, being the 2010 release, Guzaarish, that starred Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. With the SLB brand and a well-known star cast, it was predicted that Ram-leela would receive a grand opening.
“To an extent, the film did well on Friday. But due to the mixed reviews it got from the critics and the movie lovers both, the collection dipped by 20 per cent on Saturday,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra. On Sunday, though, he adds, “The audience came back to the theatres. In fact, the collection even surpassed the opening day numbers.” Thus, the opening weekend of the film delivered a performance, which was already expected even after facing protests in places like UP, Saurashtra among others.
The film which was made at an estimated budget of Rs.60 crore, according to Eros International's spokesperson has already collected Rs.52.75 crore in its opening weekend. “If it sails through this week then it’s great for the film’s business or else ...Ram-leela is in danger,” explains Mehra. Though it generated a lot of buzz through its promos, the film had its own flaws that affected its business. Opines Mehra, “The film was promoted as a Hindi version of Romeo and Juliet, but here, lust overpowers love. So when people had to shed tears when the lead pair dies, they were rather relieved that the film got over.” The film has garnered $ 4 million through its overseas performance.
At the multiplex Cinepolis India, ...Ram-leela received an average occupancy of nearly 95 per cent on the first three days of its release.
At Regal, a Mumbai-based single screen, ...Ram-leela did excellent business on Sunday. The film received three shows each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. According to a source from the theatre, the Padukone-Singh-starrer had an opening with Rs.1,96,365.15 lakhs on Friday. But on Saturday, it dropped to Rs.1,93,711.85 lakhs, only to pick up on Sunday with Rs.2,43,643.90 lakhs at the box-office.
