Reiterating his New Year’s message to the nation, President Pranab Mukherjee asked “each and every Indian” to resolve and dedicate 2013 for “safety, security and dignity of our mothers, of our sisters and of our daughters.” He said: “Yes, we are ashamed of what happened recently in Delhi. What is happening in almost every part of the world. Sometimes it comes to our notice, sometimes it doesn’t. If a nation cannot respect its mothers, sisters and daughters, that country is not civilised. Respecting women is a very fundamental principle in any civilisation.”
The President also said that crime cannot be wished away by making laws.
“The change has to be implemented in the culture, in the system, in the way of life. It is our responsibility to ensure it, to secure it; and for that whatever is to be done, we can do it,” he said.
