‘Innovation key to nurture good science’

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2009, feels that it is not important to get a Nobel, instead the need of the hour is to nurture “good science” and engage in new research.
“I have seen students who undergo PhD abroad, come to India and increase their post doctoral degrees, rather than innovating. Innovation should be done at an early age, and this will help nurture good science,”Ramakrishnan said addressing students at the Bose Institute here.
According to him, India needs stable funding, good mentors and encouraging brains for development of new scientific research. In India, there’s hierarchy at every level; so it’s difficult for students to freely discuss their ideas, he added.
