New Delhi, Jan 30: The Kisan Sabha, DYFI, SFI and the AIDWA have urged the Centre to ensure higher allocations in education, farmer-friendly measures and strengthening of the public distribution system (PDS) in this year's Budget.
Representatives of the Left-supported organisations will be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and finance minister P Chidambaram shortly to place the demands.
The groups are also planning agitation programmes during the Budget Session against the alleged deviation of the UPA government from the CMP.
"The PDS has to be strengthened. Flagship schemes such as the NREGS and the ICDS should get more attention from the finance ministry," AIDWA general secretary Sudha Sundararaman told FE.
The Kisan Sabha, the CPI(M)'s outfit for farmers, on the other hand, has sought more farmer-friendly measures in the Budget. "We have sought an appointment of both the Prime Minister and the finance minister. We are yet to get the confirmation. We have prepared a charter of demands for farmers," Kisan Sabha treasurer and CPI(M) central committee member Noorul Huda told FE.
The DYFI and the SFI, have sought 10% budgetary allocation for education. "A youth-friendly Budget, which addresses issues like unemployment, is our demand. We are preparing a detailed memorandum to the authorities ahead of the Budget. We will also hold a protest march at Delhi on February 26 against the economic policies of the government," DYFI president P Sreeramakrishnan said.
