Deduction under Section 80C may be claimed only if the investments are done within the respective financial year, i.e., between April 01 and March 31

How can I link my PAN card with Aadhaar online or do I have to visit the income tax department?

Is it compulsory to complete all the Section 80C investments by March 31, 2016? Can I do some investments in April and claim benefits for 2016-17?
– Amit Joshi

Deduction under Section 80C may be claimed only if the investments are done within the respective financial year, i.e., between April 01 and March 31. Hence, investments made in April 2017 will be eligible for deduction for the financial year 2017-18 and not financial year 2016-17.

I had a pension plan for which I had paid premium for 10 years. I had never taken Section 80C benefit on this. Now I want to surrender prematurely the policy. Will I have to pay any tax on it?
– J R Sriram

In case deduction was allowed earlier under Section 80CCC, upon surrender of pension plan, the amount standing to the individual’s credit in the fund, along with interest or bonus accrued or credited to his account, will be taxable in that year. However, in the given situation, we understand that no deduction has been claimed. If the amount received is in commutation of pension, then such commuted value received would be exempt under Section 10(10A) (iii). In case the amount is received as a lump-sum, then such amount would be taxable either as income from other sources or as capital gains depending upon the terms of the plan.

I am unable to link my Aadhaar to my PAN in the Income Tax portal due to name mismatch of maiden surname in PAN and married surname in Aadhaar. Despite a recent press release stating that there is no need to change the name on either card, till today the IT portal has not introduced the option of uploading a scan of Aadhaar car, nor of verifying through code sent the Aadhaar registered mobile no. I request the IT dept. to urgently add these options to the efiling portal so that the essee for no fault of his, does not have to face the daunting prospect of getting the PAN card deregistered! I also request the Financial Express to take this issue up with the concerned authorities. Not just me, but several thousands of essees are facing this mismatch problem which needs to be addressed.

I am a senior citizen and I am not able to link PAN card with AADHAR card due to mismatch in names. My PAN database shows full name (initial expanded). Name with initial is printed on PAN card in capital letters. Name with initial as per PAN card is printed on Aadhar card in small letters. I don’t have any supporting do ent showing full name to correct it in aadhar card. I am a ried person and paying income tax and filing returns every year. I don’t know how to resolve the above problem to comply with the income tax act my request to Income Tax Dept and UDAI is to help us as large people are facing this type problems. My other family members are also facing the similar problem. Their aadahar cards are without DOB, only birth year is mentioned.

You can and must file a return for the year ending 31-03-2016 and 31-03-2017. If not filed department issues notice and in that case penalty for concealment is attracted for the earlier years. Further, every citizen is supposed to be an awakened one.
