Market benchmark Sensex gained 231.41 points or 0.77% today to end at 30,126.21 as banks led the bull run on the back of reports that the NPA ordinance may be promulgated soon. The 50-share NSE Nifty gained 47.95 points or 0.51 per cent to 9,359.90 as banks stocks soared.
A total of 18 scrips in the 30-share Sensex ended higher, while 12 scrips fell and one remained unchanged. On the Nifty, 26 scrips in the 51-share index ended higher, while 24 scrips fell and one remained unchanged.

Major gainers on the Sensex were ICICI Bank up 9.24% at Rs 297.95; Adani Ports up 3.68% at Rs 339.60; Axis Bank up 3.36% at Rs 518.90; SBI up 3.27% at Rs 298.80; Hindustan Unilever Ltd up 2.36% at Rs 956.15 and ITC up 1.41% at Rs 281.10.
Major losers were Tata Motors down 2.27% to Rs 436.50; ONGC down 1.15% at Rs 188.75; Mahindra & Mahindra down 0.89% at Rs 1335.25; Cipla down 0.84% at Rs 549.65; Reliance Industries down 0.84% at Rs 1,358.75 and Tata Consultancy Services down 0.44% at Rs 2,327.10.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4,459.53 crore, 5.33% higher than Rs 4,233.49 crore registered during the previous trading session. Market breadth turned positive as 1,453 stocks soared during today’s trading session, 1,406 stocks closed lower and 146 remained unchanged.
The total market capitalization of BSE Sensex was Rs 50.4379 lakh crore. The Price to Earnings (PE) multiple of the Sensex stood at 22.69 while its Price to Book value (PB) multiple was at 2.93 and the Dividend Yield was at 1.39.
