“India ka smartphone” was launched today by Mukesh Ambani at the 40th AGM of the Reliance Industries Limited. The chairman of RIL said that data is the new oxygen, and reiterated Rjio’s commitment to end digital starvation and disempowerment by enhancing connectivity, and providing device and data affordability. There are 78 crore mobile phones in India,” Mukesh Ambani pointed out. “However, in this 78 crore, there are more than 50 crore feature phone users, who have been left out. They can neither afford the cheapest LTE smartphone, nor the exorbitant cost of data.” Effectively priced at Rs.0, anybody can lay their hands on the phone by parting with Rs. 1,500, which will be refunded after 3 years. Here’s what the experts had to say at the launch of the 4G Reliance Jiophone.
Sanjay Kapoor, the former airtel CEO said, “ Jio has expanded its horizon from smartphone to feature phone. From RIL’s perspective this was a very important segment to enter, as lots of people are waiting to consume data. It envisages a larger market with free voice for life. The video content is great, and there will be many takers for this low hanging fruit. A new trend is being set, this signifies the death of 2g feature phones in the market”.
Vikas Agarwal of OnePlus India said that the economy will benefit, as more people will now be connected. He added that it’s a positive for the telecom sector, and jio is undoubtedly a big success story.
Nitin Soni from Fitch Ratings felt that the launch is a good move at very low price point. He was confident that this development will help RIL in next leg of growth. He also reckoned that it will help to add 4g customers. However, he pointed out that historically 4G bundled smartphones haven’t worked that well.
