PRE-MARKETS

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.2 per cent in early trade on Wednesday, bouncing back from a four-month low touched the previous day. Asian shares won the reprieve from a rally in Wall Street shares as the sell-off in global bonds and sharp gains in the dollar paused for now. Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.0 percent to nine-month high thanks to the fall in the yen against the dollar. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.29 per cent to a record high while the S&P 500 gained 0.75 per cent. Since Donald Trump’s unexpected victory in the US Presidential election last week, US shares have rallied while US bond prices tumbled, pushing up their yields sharply, as investors expect higher inflation under his presidency. The yield on 10-year US Treasuries slipped to 2.230 per cent from Monday’s 11-month high of 2.302 per cent, although that is sharply above its levels around 1.86 percent before the election. US retail sales rose more than expected in October, pointing to sustained economic strength that could allow the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates next month.

The BSE Sensex on Tuesday tanked by 514.19 points to end at 26,304.63 on worries about capital outflows as US bond yields surged and the dollar strengthened, and as heavyweight Tata Motors, mired in a corporate power struggle, plunged after reporting weak earnings. The Nifty cracked below 8,200-mark and fell 187.85 points to 8,108.45. The Chinese yuan broke through 6.86 per dollar to its weakest since December 2008 and last traded at 6.85. The dollar pulled back from close to 14-year highs on Tuesday, euro zone government bond yields fell and the price of copper tumbled as traders cashed in gains from a rally fuelled by Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.
