Sensex ends 54 points down, Nifty settles below 8,600; Capital Goods, IT drag

Benchmark BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty opened higher on Friday tracking mixed global cues.

CLOSING BELL

Sensex closed 53.66 points down at 27782.25 on account of selling in IT, capital goods, banks and TECk stocks amid mixed global cues. Investors stood on sidelines ahead of a speech by US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen in Jackson Hole, Wyoming later in the day. Nifty settled 19.05 points down at 8573.15. In the 50-share index Tata Motors DVR, Tata Motors, Bharti Infratel, Reliance Industries and Asian Paints gained between 1.45 per cent and 5.23 per cent. On the other hand, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Bank of Baroda, Adani Ports and Larsen & Toubro dipped between 1.84 per cent and 2.79 per cent.

2.33 pm: Spice Mobility shares advanced as much as 14 per cent in Friday’s trade after the company announced that a subsidiary of the company had divested its entire equity stake constituting 26 per cent of share capital in Vavia Technologies. The scrip was trading 4.76 per cent up at Rs 16.50 (at 2.33 pm). Sensex was down 119 points at 27716. Nifty was trading 42.05 points down at 8550.15

2.25 pm: In the 30-share index, Wipro, Adani Ports, Larsen & Toubro, Infosys and ICICI Bank were trading lower by 2.91 per cent, 2.14 per cent, 2.14 per cent, 1.40 per cent and 1.23 per cent, respectively.

1.45 pm: Shares of rating agencies ICRA, CARE and Crisil were trading firm after new RBI norms. Read more Sensex was trading 68.46 points down at 27767. Nifty was trading 19.90 points down at 8,572.

12.54 pm: Meanwhile, Lupin has received tentative approval for its Paroxetine Extended-Release Tablets USP, 12.5 mg, 25 mg and 37.5 mg from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to market a generic version of Apotex Technologies, Inc.’s Paxil CR Tablets, 12.5 mg, 25 mg and 37.5 mg. As per IMS MAT June 2016, Paxil CR had US sales of $127.4 million. Shares of the company were trading 0.11 per cent up at Rs 1524.25. Sensex was down 79.30 points at 27,756.61. Nifty was trading 22.35 points down at 8,569.85.

11.52 am: Trident Ltd shares were trading 12.65 per cent higher at Rs 56.10. The BSE has sought a clarification from Trident Ltd on August 26, 2016, with reference to news published in CNBC TV 18 dated August 26, 2016 stating “Target Group mulls shifting Welspun contract to Trident. Target Group may be sampling bedsheets made by Trident” Welspun India was trading 1.10 per cent up at Rs 55.

10.59 am: The BSE Midcap and Smallcap index were trading higher by 0.04 per cent and 0.05 per cent at 12982.63 and 12508.20, respectively. In the midcap space, Crisil and Biocon were trading higher by 4.02 per cent and 3.63 per cent.

10.11 am: Indian rupee was trading 4 paise up at 67.02 in morning trade on accont of selling of the US currency by exporters and banks. Sensex was trading 11.87 points up at 27852.43. Nifty was up 2.25 points at 8594.45.

9.27 am: Sensex was up 87.28 points at 27917. Nifty was trading higher by 25.75 points at 8617.95. Axis Bank shares were trading 0.08 per cent down at Rs 585.95. According to ANI, Deutsche Bank has downgraded Axis Bank to hold but not changed the target of Rs 590 per share. The firm has warned the stock to lack near-term triggers as it remains one of the structurally strong banks considering a weak transitionary phase.

9.25 am: Welspun India was trading 2.85 per cent up at Rs 55.95. In the 50-share index, Tata Motors, Bharti Infratel, Lupin, UltraTech Cement, Tata Motors DVR were trading up between 1.10 per cent and 1.95 per cent. On the other hand, Bank of Baroda, State Bank of India, YES Bank, BPCL and Coal India were down between 0.38 per cent and 0.69 per cent.

9.17 am: Sensex was trading 76.07 points up at 27911.98. Nifty was trading 19.95 points up at 8612. Biocon was trading 4.81 per cent up at 907.25. The shares of the company gained after European Medicines Agency (EMA) has accepted for review Mylan’s application to market biosimilar Trastuzumab, co-developed with Biocon, that is used to treat certain breast and gastric cancers.

9.15 am: Benchmark BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty opened higher on Friday tracking mixed global cues. Sensex openex 46.84 points up at 27882.7, while Nifty opened 22.15 points up at 8,614.35. Equity markets on Thursday failed to sustain the positive momentum on Thursday as selling in last leg of trade pulled down the benchmark Sensex by over 224 points.
