Indian benchmark indices, tracking their Asian peers and dragged by weak global cues, ended the day in negative. Ending a three-day rally, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty fell from their record highs and closed below their respective landmark levels of 30,500 points and 9,500 points.
BSE Sensex, the barometer index, slipped 223.98 points or 0.73% to 30,434.79 points, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 lost 96.30 points or 1.01% to close at 9,429.45 points.
Earlier on Wednesday, major U.S. indices declined as uncertainty over US President Donald Trump’s future increased following reports that he tried to intervene in a federal investigation.
Gold prices rose for the second straight day today, gaining Rs 225 to Rs 28,985 per 10 gram, while silver dropped below the Rs 39,000- mark by falling Rs 500 to Rs 38,800 per kg on account of reduced demand.

A total of 23 scrips on the 30-share Sensex fell whereas six scrips ended higher with one scrip remaining unchanged, while on the 51-share Nifty, six scrips advanced while 45 scrips declined.
Major gainers on the Sensex were Wipro up 3.47% at Rs 523.60; Tata Consultancy Services up 3.38% at Rs 2,534.10; Infosys up 1.00% at Rs 961.70; Lupin Ltd up 0.61% at Rs 1,304.90; Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd up 0.51% at Rs 653.90 and Asian Paints up 0.16% at Rs 1,155.65.
Major losers were Tata Motors down 2.55% to Rs 438.20; Axis Bank down 2.15% at Rs 491.85; Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd down 1.96% at Rs 2,678.35; Bajaj Auto Ltd down 1.94% at Rs 2,973.85; Mahindra & Mahindra down 1.92% at Rs 1,351.30 and Larsen & Toubro down 1.91% at Rs 1,721.90.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4,311.27 crore, falling from Rs 6,808.38 crore registered during the yesterday’s trading session. Market breadth turned negative as 2,059 stocks declined while 687 stocks advanced and 164 remained unchanged.
The total market cap of BSE Sensex was Rs 51.6734 lakh crore. The Price to Earnings (PE) multiple of the Sensex stood at 23.21 while its Price to Book value (PB) multiple was at 2.97 and the Dividend Yield was at 1.31.
