Cracks are appearing in the nationwide jewellers’ protest against the imposition of 1% excise duty by the Centre with jewellers of Gujarat refraining from joining the agitation. “This strike is a misunderstanding and is being carried out by people who are supported by parties other than the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). We were given an assurance by BJP president Amit Shah and Union minister Piyush Goyal that our demands will be addressed. So we see no reason to protest. Our understanding is clear and we are satisfied with the result of our discussion with the government,” said Gujarat Jewellers’ Association president Zaveribhai Zaveri. He also expressed satisfaction with a recent government circular, which formally extended the time limit provided to jewellers for completing central excise registration by July 1, from March 1. The liability, however, will be in effect from March.
