It so happened that in 1990 when Hussein had ordered the invasion of Kuwait, he held 15 American hostages from a local General Motors to be used as human shield. These captives were placed at startegic bomb locations. When Ali, who himself was an American came to know about it, despite being ridden with Parkinson’s, he decided to go and talk to Saddam.

Including the then United States President H.W.Bush, nobody believed that Muhammad Ali’s visit will do any good the cause.

“I basically believe these people are playing into the propaganda game that Iraq is holding here,” said Joseph Wilson, then the top American diplomat in Baghdad. “These people traveling to Iraq are making a serious mistake.”

Muhammad visited Iraq to meet the President Saddam Hussein. While his step was criticsed a lot even at his home ground, Ali did not decipher from his goal. He had to wait a whole week before he could meet Saddam but only to return with success and the 15 free Americans.

Ali proved his words right as he said ‘He who is not courageous enough to take risks will not accomplish anything’.
