Smartphones are our new best friends. They are there when nobody else is there for us, not even the older friends. Stuck in a jam? In an awkward social situation? Alone in a public place? Smartphone is smart enough to not provide you with just utility but company as well.
No wonder we are constantly swiping on our buddy day in and day out. So much so that it has given us sleepless nights! Every time you’re in bed and the phone lightens up, so do you! But just like all others, is this addiction good?
Apparently, smartphones have a blue light system in them that brings the visibility during the day, when you’re out in the blazing sun. But the same blue light mimics the sun brightness at night when you pull out of your covers to check that new notification. And the brain in response stops producing melatonin, a hormone responsible for producing sleep.
But is that all? Insomnia is not the only side-effect you might face. Few others include:
1.The sleeplessness is something that affects your memory as well. That banging in the head when you didn’t sleep last night? Yes that’s what happens when you tamper with the neurons ignoring a sound sleep.
2.And if only you thought melatonin was just a hormone, it is the causal agent for depression. And that’s one thing best avoided.
3.If only memory loss and depression didn’t scare you enough, you’re worst nightmare might just come true! Smartphone lights leads to lack of melatonin which in turn leads to hormone disruption and obesity. So, s good night’s sleep is not necessary for your eye bags but your body as well.
4.The risk have been extended to diseases like breast and prostate cancer and cataract in future! And that certainly needs a thought to be given now.
So, now you know why the doctor always asks to put the phone a bay before sleeping.
