Notwithstanding the tensions between the two countries, India’s yoga has found an interesting use in China! According to a report in the China Daily, yoga is being used to help people dealing with the problem of depression. According to the report, Yogi Yoga – said to be a popular yoga institution in the country – has launched a campaign to help Chinese university students tackle depression. Mohan Bhandari, the Indian co-founder of Yogi Yoga, has said that scientific researches have shown that meditation and yoga have positive effects on anxiety and depression.

Bhandari’s institute is now touring ten top universities in China to demonstrate how yoga can help fight stress. The “100 days, 100 universities” campaign will last until the end of December. The institute plans to send local volunteers to teach students in universities that it will not be able to cover. Bhandari has also ‘developed’ yoga positions that are said to be helpful in managing stress levels, the paper reported. He has also shared the video for this online, so that more people can make use of this. A Sina Weibo account has also been opened to answer queries from those who practise yoga.

Yin Yan, who co-founded Yogi Yoga along with Bhandari wants to share ‘authentic India yoga’ with Chinese people. Yan went to India to learn yoga. She was the editor-in-chief of fashion magazine Elle China, before she co-founded Yogi Yoga.

Yoga is increasingly being adopted around the world as a way of relieving stress and also for preventing ailments. June 21 is celebrated as the International Day of Yoga. On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21 as International Day of Yoga by PM Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014. PM Modi had said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition . It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature”. Modi had suggested the date as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
