TRAI asks telcos to pay Re 1 for call drops from January 1 to compensate consumers

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday said that mobile phone companies start compensating for call drops to consumers from January 1, 2016.

Mobile phone operators would have to compensate Rs. 1 for each call dropped to the subscriber, with the upper limit for call drop compensation capped at three per day for each consumer, FE had reported earlier Friday, citing the regulatory proposal.

The regulator has asked mobile phone operators to send a SMS to the user within four-hours intimating of a call drop, and the credit for such drops to prepaid users.  In case, of post-paid subscribers, operators will have to adjust the compensation for call drops in their monthly bills to users, it  said.
