Social media is going through a revolution and flowing in that wave are the apps like WhatsApp, Hike, Facebook and Skype which connect people the most. These apps are going through a revamp and recently most of them have unveiled their video chat feature along with the voice calls. There are indeed many other messaging apps which offer the video calling service, but WhatsApp’s and Hike’s incorporation will be interesting as together they have more than a billion users. In fact, it is surprising that with its resources and technical knowledge, it could only come up with the feature so late. Hike, though is mostly for Indian users.Video calling is a highly anticipated service on messaging apps. Facebook as always been a revolutionary when it comes to virtual communication, from texts to voice. Here are the most widely used messaging apps with video and voice calling options, and let’s look at the latest changes and upgrades that they have packed in their platforms:
First on the list is Facebook Messenger. Social media giant Facebook has updated its Messenger as well as WhatsApp apps for Windows 10 and the most notable feature that has been incorporated is the voice and video calling. Now users will not have to close the app and then open the browser to call friends on the Facebook and WhatsApp lists. Now the Windows apps will work similar to the Android apps with full functionality. Users can see a phone icon at the top right corner of the chat screen. If the person the user is trying to call is active, the button becomes green and the call can be made just by tapping it. Yet, the desktop app for Windows is still not quite robust like the Android and iOS versions. The phone icon on the updated Messenger is on the top right corner of the screen in the Windows 10 app. A chat glows green when the other person is currently active, Venturebeat reported. When you start a call, the app asks the user if the ‘calls use Wi-Fi or your data plan’. Facebook also allows free calls on its messenger service. It requires that both sides have the same app in order to make free calls. Facebook Messenger has a big advantage due to this as most people have the application on their phones.
WhatsApp’s just released its much anticipated video-calling feature finally but as of now, it is available for the beta version of the app only. According to some reports, the video-calling feature is up for grabs in the beta version of the messaging app, but only for Android users. However, WhatsApp still has not started to advertise the feature, even though there have been many reports that people have started testing this Android app’s new beta version on their smartphones. If the users are on the new beta version of the app on Android, then they will now be able to see a ‘Video Call’ and ‘Voice Call’ choices when they tap the top dialer button. A new dialog giving the option between a standard voice call and a video call will appear. The feature reportedly lags a bit since it is still in its beta version. WhatsApp has an official beta testing program available on Google Play. In order to own this feature, users will have to get WhatsApp’s latest beta version. If you have to do just a voice call on WhatsApp call, just open the chat with the contact you want to call and tap on the phone button at the top. If another person calls, you will see an incoming WhatsApp call screen. Just tap and slide the green button to answer the call, or to reject the call just slide the red button. Also, there is an option to tap on the message icon on the call screen to decline the call and send a message.
Hike Messenger, India’s homegrown messaging platform, has launched video calling feature for all of its users. The messaging app, whose primary target is youth, has said that the video call experience with the app will be ‘simple, reliance and high quality’. “Video calling on Hike is a simple and easy to use the feature that works on a single tap that is integrated into chat threads with friends. The feature has been built for a reliance and high-quality video experience that works even under challenging network conditions, including good quality 2G,” the company said in a press statement, according to a report. Just download the new Hike Messenger or update your current Hike Messenger application if not done for more than two months. Select the contact you want to connect with. Then tap on the call button at the top right, and you will be prompted to choose voice or video option. Just select to make the call.
Microsoft is expected to roll out a redesigned version of Skype in the next few weeks, both Android and iOS that’s better suited for smartphones.
There is a small change in the redesign for smartphones, especially for video and voice chats. It will drop the ‘Call phones’ tab and replace it with ‘Calls’, which makes it more sensible as the receiver can just answer it from any other device including Watch as well. The company has said that the app is now more simplified with one-tap access to main calling features. The ‘Call’ tab offers access to Skype audio/video calls and calls any other number which uses Skype credit. Microsoft-owned Skype will kill many voicemail features as there has been a decline in the use of traditional voicemail. Options to create custom email pings, voicemail greetings and SMS have been removed. When contacts who are called by finding to be not answering or unavailable, the will give the option to leave a video or chat message. This feature is present in iOS already.
