Uber, the international taxi hailing service has now ventured into the food delivery sector in India, starting from Mumbai. Under the name UberEATS, it has partnered with more than 200 restaurants and will take on famous services like Zomato and Swiggy. Bhavik Rathod, head of UberEATS India has reportedly said that the expansion into India via Mumbai is a ‘major step in global expansion strategy’. He also informed PTI, that the company is looking to expand into cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and others in the future. However, a timeline on the expansion strategy has not been provided yet. Also, there is no revelation on the investments that Uber has made in setting up UberEATS’ business in India.
Earlier, Allen Penn, Asia Pacific Head of UberEATS had said in a blog post, “I am incredibly excited about bringing UberEATS to India.” He had added, “This is a significant investment, it spans across multiple cities and regions, and it has the potential to change the food industry – with the push of a button – in one of the most vibrant food cultures in the world.”

Uber has tied up with 200-300 delivery partners and will follow the food delivery business model, according to the company. UberEATS will charge restaurants a service fee to use the platform. When it comes to delivery, UberEATS will use a third-party service. Rathod had told PTI that the restaurants set the food prices according to their menus, and UberEATS is planning to charge users a delivery fee of Rs 15 per order including all taxes.
UberEATS is a famous service in 26 countries across the world. It had started as a business in the year 2014 in Los Angeles, and now has a presence in 78 cities around the world including Mumbai. Currently, UberEATS is presently a stand-alone app. Uber has chosen a tough market to enter India, as it is already crowded in the food delivery space which includes many key players like Zomato and Swiggy. Even these companies have been making big efforts to make their presence felt, internationally. Additionally, in metro cities, there are several food applications and websites like Box8, Faasos and FreshMenu. Recently, Google had ventured into food delivery business. Even Uber-rival Ola had dabbled in this space but had to close down the program within a year.

The biggest challenge for the new service by Uber will be to offer innovative ideas in terms of service and user experience as against those already present in this market. One of the methods that Uber has done it, is that users can place their offers much ahead of its delivery. It means you can schedule your order for later so that you do not have to worry about the timings, which is a unique feature not seen in other service apps. UberEATS’ launch partner is PayTM and you can pay directly via the payments app. Also, you can live track your orders.
Meanwhile, in order to use UberEATS, you need to download the app first. Now, you will have to enter the address where the food needs to be delivered. Users can also browse according to restaurants, price, cuisine type and also the speed of delivery.
