Uber is getting a major upgrade. US-based ride-hailing service Uber is one of the top downloaded apps in major operating systems, yet that does not stop it from revamping it totally. Uber just went through its biggest makeover in years, by unveiling better user interface, destination suggestions, more transparent fares etc. By integrating the app with other social media platforms like Foursquare, Snapchat, Pandora, Yelp among others, the designers has created a totally new and improved in-ride experience, ‘building it from the ground up’. In a media briefing, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick told reporters, “This is more than a normal app update. We decided earlier this year to do a full rewrite of the app.”
The last redesign happened in 2012 after its launch in 2009. In the new Uber app, users will get it much easier than before by ‘learning from your routines’. In a press statement, Uber said, “Re-engineered keeping in mind the changing needs of riders around the world, the new rider app aims to recapture the clean and simple aesthetic of the original Uber experience – without sacrificing the choice the riders now expect – a faster, smarter and more personalised rider app. Here are the few changes which have been incorporated in the new Uber app:
Destination first: According to Uber, the riding experience focusses on the destination of the rider and then ‘tailor the journey better’. The company has designed it in such a way that it will get rid of the ‘pickup location’ and ‘destination’ and instead ask the user ‘Where to?’
People search: Users will now be able to share locations with friends as well as add them to the contact list. This addition will serve the purpose that users will be able to set the destination with a person’s name instead of a location, after sharing that with the other person.
Calendar: This new integration of Calendar with the app is going to be a welcome feature for a lot of busy commuters. Users will be able to connect their meeting and appointments on their calendar with the Uber app, as it automatically creates ‘Shortcuts’.
Shortcuts: The new Uber app is reimagined as it learns from the users’ routine, and create ‘shortcuts’ which will be able to predict the destination of the user.
Compare fares with cars: It will be easier for users to compare the fares for different variants of cab rides like UberPool, UberGo and Uber X.
Yuhki Yamashita, senior product manager at Uber in a blog post said, “We designed the new Uber app around… beliefs that time is a luxury and that the information you need should always be at your fingertips. Gone are the days when everyone’s app looks the same… And by starting with your destination, we can tailor the journey to you. With other integrations like Yelp and Foursquare, the users will be able to check details of a location directly from the app. Uber Feed will reportedly feature the details of bus and train rides.
