Gionee is a very popular brand in the highly crowded India smartphone market, especially in the tier II and III cities. Smart-phones from this Chinese device maker tend to stand out from others, primarily due to their attractive design and good performance.
This time the Chinese device maker is back with a new phone; this is the Gionee S6 Pro smartphone, a smooth and fast device with good build quality and a decent lineup of specs. The phone comes with a 5.50-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels. It retails for R23,999. We got the Gold variant for a product evaluation; let us check out its performance.
My first impression: the S6 Pro is a sleek phone with a metal body and needless to say, it looks appealing and is attractive enough to be flaunted. Dimension-wise, it measures 153.00 x 75.20 x 7.60 mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 170g. It is a dual SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Nano-SIM and Nano-SIM. Dual-SIM devices are no longer a rarity in the market these days; such phones are really handy for travelling and work. Also, the S6 Pro is quite slim and it can easily slip into your pocket or bag. Its unibody case makes it tough and ready for use all day.
If you like your phone displays crisp and vibrant, you won’t be disappointed by the 5.5 FHD IPS display on the S6 Pro. Colours leap off the screen, almost to the same degree as any other high-end device, while the phone’s pixel resolution keeps images pleasingly sharp. Take my word, for this price you’ll be hard pressed to find a better display—at least, that was the impression after my hands-on session.
Probing the innards, the S6 Pro packs a 13-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 8-megapixel front shooter for selfies. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM, 3G and 4G. Sensors on the S6 Pro include Compass Magnetometer, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.
Switched on, the S6 Pro comes to life pretty fast. It has an extremely clean user interface that is easy to navigate. Its 5.5 FHD IPS display is sharp and bright. The phone’s octa-core processor seems to handle Android and the pre-installed apps without an issue. On the camera front, it seems to be a decent snapper, but don’t expect it to take super-fast action shots, though the sample photos that I took were sharp and well-lit. I must confess I used the phone for a short period of time, but apps opened up quickly and lag was nowhere to be seen. However, I’ll be interested to see how well it copes with games, and continuous use.
All in all, the S6 Pro is an attractive proposition for users with a premium look and feel, and performance fast enough to go head-to-head with any mid-range handset on the market.
