Harman provides great audio products. I have a JBL speaker at home and I am also familiar with the company’s widely popular Flip series of portable Bluetooth speakers, renowned for their good sound quality. The third-generation model of JBL Flip is here—JBL Flip 3. I was curious to check this one out as I had to pick up a decent wireless speaker for a youngster in the family. An audio device that is sturdy, easy to carry, emits room-filling sound and most important, affordable. Take my word, you won’t regret spending your hard earned money on this one. Read on to find out.
JBL Flip 3 is the next generation wireless speaker in the Flip series. In the box, you’ll get the Flip 3 unit, micro USB cable and a quick start-up guide. The one that we got was bright blue in colour (it comes in seven other options) which is quite pleasing to the eye. JBL advertises it as an all-purpose, all-weather companion that integrates music into every aspect of your life—from tabletop to poolside, from sunny mornings to rainy nights. It is also splash-proof so no more worrying about rain or spills; you can even clean it with running tap water. Just don’t submerge it. The durable fabric material and rugged rubber housing allows your speaker to outlast all of your adventures.
JBL Flip 3 weighs 450 grams and like its predecessors, it can be stood up vertically or laid out horizontally. As with all such speakers, this JBL device plays music from a Bluetooth-enabled source—Android, BlackBerry, iOS or Windows-based laptop, mobile or tablet—so long as it’s in the same room. Probing the device, at first I thought there was no pause/play button on the speaker, but it turns out the answer/end button doubles as a pause/play button and also allows you to skip tracks forward and back. The entire mechanism is easy to execute and one needs to just get used to it.
JBL Flip 3 is equipped with a built-in noise and echo canceling speakerphone and you can wirelessly link multiple JBL Connect-enabled speakers together to amplify the sound. JBL Connect is a free app for iOS and Android devices. The speaker uses Bluetooth 4.1 technology and has the typical wireless streaming range of about 33 feet or 10 meters. In my assessment, the optimal listening distance for the Flip 3 is somewhere between 3 and 12 feet. You can wirelessly connect up to three smartphones or tablets to the speaker and take turns playing surprisingly powerful, room-filling stereo sound. You can also take crystal clear calls from your speaker with the touch of a button, thanks to the noise and echo cancelling speakerphone.
I connected the Flip 3 to my mobile phone and it’s a much better speaker than many other options available in the market. Its sound is crystal clear with great highs and mids. It charges quickly and connects to a mobile phone or laptop instantly for wireless music experience. It is also great to carry along when you are travelling and sets a good ambiance. Its 3000mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery supports upto 10 hours of playtime.
In my summary, JBL Flip 3 is a comprehensive portable Bluetooth speaker that delivers surprisingly powerful, room-filling stereo sound everywhere. It is impressive for a small speaker at this price and well worth checking out. I would recommend this as a decent buy under 10k.
