Apple iPhone 7: With only a few hours remaining for Apple’s launch, the media is abuzz with what the Cupertino based giant will throw up for its seventh version of the smartphone. While reports suggest that Apple might be able to throw in a curve ball with no headphone jack, dual-lens camera and some new colours, we look beyond the phone to determine what the iconic company will do with the new Apple Watch rumoured to release with the phone. The company released the first version of the watch in 2015 and while it saw a good pick up in early days, the market started cooling off with people turning towards other brands like Fitbit.
Data released by IDC in July showed that sales have more than halved in the second quarter of 2016. With Apple trying to revive its phone sales with iPhone 7, it would also need to catch everybody’s imagination with the new watch as well. Here’s a look at some of the market buzz around the Apple Watch.
Apple Watch: Time for FaceTime
While we have seen front facing camera with some wearables, Apple may up the game with a front facing camera in the top bezel. The company is expected to come out with image sensor and picture storage software. While the camera would certainly provide an enhanced selfie experience for users it may also change the way people FaceTime.
Apple Watch: Who’s tracking?
Apple may go for enhanced tracking ability on the watch making it a serious contender in the wearables market, especially for those looking for enhanced workout experience. Although the watch may feature just basic distance reporting, but it could do some serious damage to others if Apple goes beyond that.
Apple Watch: The James Bond moment
Although this may be a far-off guess, but Apple may finally make the watch independent of the phone. The watch will not turn into a magnet like in 007 James Bond movies, but a standalone device LTE device will eliminate the dependence on iPhone and would allow Apple to market it as a standalone device which would certainly help boost it’s sale.
Apple Watch: Ready to swim
While not as defining as other features, a waterproof watch is the need of the hour. Although there are doubts about a waterproof iPhone, a watch would help Apple users to take a dive while wearing it and may also help stop Apple’s dive in the market.
Apple Watch: OS is the key
The buck stops with the new OS. While the watch is also rumoured to have a better screen and a thinner design, that is what we have come to expect from Apple with each new upgrade. The new watchOS3 is what will differentiate the watch from others. Improved features and more optimisation is what will define the watch’s market.
While the watch certainly seems more exciting than the new iPhone, what remains to be seen is whether Apple would give enough to revive its fortunes in the wearables market. With Apple’s product much like the iPhone featuring on the premium side than other cheaper versions available, the company would have to come up with something enticing to attract customers back to the brand. For die hard fans, watch would certainly be a breath of fresh air.
