Wearable technology is hot these days. Though at a nascent stage, India is set to become a huge market for wearable products comprising fitness devices and smartwatches. Its potential has attracted several international brands to enter the market. The acceptance has been great because of the increasing interest in keeping fit and growing demand of fitness gadgets. Sensing a market opportunity, Indian mobile phone brands too are venturing into the segment. Recently homegrown smartphone maker Intex Technologies announced its foray into the wearable segment with the launch of its smartwatch under the name of iRist.
Intex is the first Indian smartphone player to launch an Android-based smartwatch, which retails for an attractive price of Rs 11,999. iRist supports 3G SIM and standalone calling feature, holds a powerful 5 megapixel camera, enables messaging and mail using voice command as well as keyboard, features an inbuilt pedometer to help you keep a track of every step you take, among a host of other features. Let us look at the iRist’s basic functions as well as
its ecosystem of applications to understand it better.
To be frank, this is my first smartwatch review and a breather from the usual mobile phone, tablet and laptop reviews that I normally do. Therefore, the first question that I posed to my own self was this: why get a smartwatch?
Do they deliver smartphone notifications, fitness features, apps and more to your wrist? Most importantly, do they allow you you to leave your phone in your pocket more often? With these thoughts in my mind, I dug deep into
deciphering the Intex device.
Out of the box, iRist comes across as a stunning smartphone-like device wrapped around your wrist in a sleek and beautiful design. It comes comes in three attractive colour variants—Black, Pink and Orange. We got the Black variant with an orange strap for a product evaluation. The stylishly designed iRist comes with an in-built 3G SIM support that enables the user to make/receive calls through iRist independently without carrying their smartphone.
Complementing this, iRist also has an app iConnect that syncs with your smartphone giving information on missed calls, unread messages and call logs of the phone.
Behind the sturdy and scratch free Sapphire glass of the iRist is a clear 240 x 240 resolution that, company
officials claim, reproduces 16 million colours. Not only does the iRist comes with a 5 megapixel camera, which is seen to be pretty good within wearable devices, but also has a Face Detection feature. What this means is that now you can capture your memories with a simple flick on your wrist. You can also share the vivid images that the iRist captures with your friends anytime on the go. Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
Talking about some of the interesting features, I must mention about the iRist’s voice assistant that sends emails, messages, dial numbers, opens and closes apps at the command of your voice. A fully functional keyboard further adds to ease of use. Then, the smartwatch comes with a Bluetooth headset giving you the convenience of effortlessly answering calls, listening to music track. Besides, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features enable seamless Internet access and file sharing.
You can let your world reside on your wrist with the amazing storage capacity of 4 GB ROM and 512 MB of RAM. It also has a 32 GB extendable memory that is a rarity in smartwatch category. Packed with a 1.2 GHz Dual-Core processor, the iRist runs on an Android OS, Kitkat 4.4.2 and has an in-built PlayStore App. The smartwatch also has a strong 600mAh battery, again not common in this category which lasts really long, at a standby time of up to 200 hours and a talk time of up to 4 hours. A user can also guide his/her way to their destination without any hurdles as the iRist is GPS navigation-enabled. An in-built pedometer helps a user keep track of every step taken and measures every calorie a user sheds while exercising.
On the fitness front, a user can count the number of steps he/she have walked in a day. Pedometer app keeps track of the number of steps you have walked in a day. Take my word, just start your activity and this application will maintain the count.
By and large, Intex’s iRist smartwatch is a good value for money. It delivers notifications to your wrist (including for texts, calls and emails) seamlessly, while its pedometer app helps you keep a track of every step you take. It has a display that’s easy to read in sunlight. Above all, wear it on your wrist to grab attention from your friends and colleagues.
