US phone maker Apple might remain focused on its higher-end iPhone line, but in recent months numerous MNC device makers have introduced affordable phones for emerging markets like India, where smartphone sales are booming. Recently, consulting group Gartner estimated in a study that by 2020 about three quarters of the world’s smartphones are expected to cost less than $100. Taking a cue, Asus, Samsung, Lenovo, Google, Microsoft are among the notable players to have rolled out cheaper handsets in recent weeks. The latest to join the trend is HTC, which recently debuted its HTC Desire 728G Dual SIM, an expressive and affordable mid-range smartphone which packs a feature-rich punch. It retails for Rs 17,990.
I have reviewed numerous mobile handsets in recent months and I can say with confidence that devices from Taiwan-based HTC truly stand out from competition when it comes to build quality; HTC has long been praised for their material design; Not only that, the company is known for its fast and feature-rich devices. HTC Desire 728G Dual SIM is no different. Featuring a host of features, advanced front and back cameras for quality image capturing, and an intelligent, stylish design, the smartphone is built to give users a fully personalised experience within a smartphone. This is enhanced further with dual SIM functionality, enabling them to switch between two different SIM cards and multitask with ease.
Out of the box, the Desire 728G Dual SIM is housed within a stylish, elegant body and boasts a clean yet striking finish. It comes in two colour options—Purple Myst and White Luxury. It measures 157.90 x 77.84 x 7.87 (height x width x thickness) and weighs 153.00 grams. Once in the hand, the phone feels like a seamless, cohesive device. It has a subtle curvature at the edges and its sides have a nice grip to hold. There aren’t a lot of gaps in the phone’s unibody design, which shows HTC’s attention to detail.
As such, the Desire 728G is a dual SIM smartphone that accepts two nano-SIM cards. On the right side of it, you have got that volume rocker, and below it, the phone’s power/lock button. A micro-USB port is the bottom edge’s sole inhibitor, while on the left, a narrow flap unhinges to reveal the micro-SIM card tray and microSD card slot.
With 16 GB internal storage, as well as a microSD slot which supports up to 2 TB of additional storage, every single moment you capture can be saved and shared without a worry. Among others, you’ll find the headset jack up top.
Probing the innards, the Desire 728G is powered by 1.3 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor and it comes with 1.5 GB of RAM. On the camera front, the phone has a 13-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel front camera that is ideal for taking selfies. It runs Android 5.0.2 and is powered by a 2800mAh non removable battery. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G. Sensors on the phone include Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer, and Gyroscope.
Let us talk about its performance. I have been using this Desire phone for over two weeks now and its speed and processing power have really amazed me no end. Technical speak, this performance is provided through a 64-bit MediaTek 1.3 GHz octa-core processor, ensuring the Desire 728G always delivers a smooth and seamless experience, whether you are showing off your latest videos, playing your favourite game, or listening to music through the crisp HTC BoomSound speakers with Dolby Audio. In fact, the combination of high-quality audio with a vibrant
5.5-inch HD screen makes the Desire 728G perfect for catching up on the latest hit shows or streaming the next big viral video.
Moving on to the camera front, there is no better way to express yourself than through imagery and the Desire’s 13 MP main camera lets you capture any moment in striking quality. This is supported by a 5 MP front camera, so you are always equipped for the perfect snap, whether it’s a close-up selfie or distant landscape shot. Both cameras also offer the ability to capture high-quality 1080p video.
While on paper, the Desire 728G seems to have pretty good specs for the camera, I found my experience with it somewhat less than satisfactory. While focusing was fine, image sharpness was a little too soft for some of my pictures.
Other than that, the Desire 728G performs in a splendid manner. The phone ran smoothly during the review period.
Performance is smooth and battery life long, and the camera is a big draw here. Its processor, coupled with 1.5 GB of RAM should be more than sufficient to launch apps, play games, and browse the Web without any hiccups. There shouldn’t be any complaints as far as call quality and data speeds are concerned too.
All in all, the Desire 728G is a dependable Android offering from HTC, and the Rs 17,990 price does seem like a steel.
