Homegrown internet chat application Hike messenger on Thursday announced that it has acquired Zip Phone, a free voice-calling company.

Hike’s first acquisition is designed to expand its product range in the internet-based communication space. The company did not disclose disclose the deal amount. Zip Phone, a one-man startup, was founded by Anuj Jain in the US.

Kavin Bharti Mittal, founder and CEO, Hike messenger, said: “From day one, we have strongly believed that through communication, we can bring India online. With the acquisition we take one more step towards that mission. Zip Phone’s technology will allow us to bring free voice calling to the market much faster. Incidentally, this is one of the top requested features from our users.”

Launched in December 2012, Hike has over 35 million users and has raised $86 million in funding till date from Tiger Global and Bharti SoftBank, which is a joint venture of Indian telecom major Bharti Enterprises and Japanese telecom major SoftBank.

Anuj Jain, founder, Zip Phone, said: “I had been keeping a close eye on Hike and its developments and I am excited to now be a part of one of the biggest and fastest growing startups in the Indian internet space.”

The app, whose predominant users are from India, has localised features considering the telecom infrastructural requirements such as Hike Offline that lets its users message even when they are offline.
