Tech giant Google in its new update for the Google Maps app on Apples operating system iOS has unveiled a new feature called the ‘Nearby traffic’ widget. The new update has brought other optimised features which increase the functionality of the app as well as the new feature which will enable the user to locate a stopping place while riding. The widget called ‘Nearby Traffic’ does everything it says on the update as it gives commuters useful information about the condition of traffic in and around their location in real time and they wouldn’t even have to open the Google Maps app. The widget tells the commuter if the traffic is heavy or normal around the area where he/she is travelling and whether they can expect delays.

This feature is present for the Android users already as it is seen in the notifications area when you open the Google Maps app and it provides details on normal and heavy traffic. The notifications come as ‘light traffic or faster than usual traffic in your area, in case there is very little traffic there. If a user wants to add the Nearby Traffic widget to the iOS device, one has to swipe right side on the home screen to access the widget. After you scroll down to the bottom part, choose edit. The user can add the Google Maps widget to the present ones or move it around as one wants. The iOS has, in fact, two more widgets which make it easier to find ‘Travel Times’ to home/work and a ‘Public Transport Nearby’ widget.

While commuters use the turn-by-turn feature navigation in the Google Maps app, the latest update also gives them the option to search for nearby areas for the presence of petrol pumps, restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops etc. After starting the journey users need to just tap on the search icon at the top right of the screen and select options among them to ‘Add Stop’. The best part is it removes the requirement of turning the navigation off, just to locate pit stops which are present on the way.

Google Maps’ recent offline Maps feature has become quite popular. At the same time, Google has been trying hard to woo the Indian commuter through its marketing campaigns and advertising which can be seen on Billboards all across the national capital. These billboard signs advertise the use of Hindi service in the Google Maps app. Given how tough it is to judge the traffic in Delhi NCR, the traffic widget is going to be very useful for the users by making it convenient for daily navigation.
