Google’s Chromecast media streaming device is now one of the most successful hardware products by the company. According to the recent sale reports, Chromecast has found its niche in the market, especially after launching its updated model and an audio only varient. Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that almost 30 million Chromecasts have been sold since its launch in 2013. In the last two months itself, 5 million Chromecasts have been sold. YouTube Red, among many other factors have led to the surge in sales of Chromecast units. Google CEO Sundar Pichai reported the figures during Google and Alphabet’s Q2 earnings call for 2016. Google had handed over hardware operations to Alphabet’s dedicated department.
Alphabet’s revenue grew by 21.3% reaching $21.5 billion, and earnings reached $4.88 billion from $3.93 billion for for the same duration in 2015. Google has generally kept quiet about the ventures by the hardware division although the inclusion of former Motorola president Rick Osterloh, is an indication of their serious efforts in improving the hardware section. The division is in charge of everything including Chromebooks and the Nexus program apart from Chromecast. Although it would be hard to say what is the reason for the unexpected surge in Chromecast sales, it can be said that the device seems will at least make steady gains in sales but. Although if sales would increase or drop off is a question that remains to be answered.
