While the whole world is drooling over the new iPhone models launched by Apple on Tuesday night, the world’s largest smartphone company Samsung is in process of coming with a phone with a bendable display, under the company’s popular Note brand, reported Associated Press. As per the report, the news was confirmed by Koh Dong-jin, president of mobile business at Samsung Electronics who while addressing media in Seoul said that Samsung wants to release a smartphone with a foldable display in 2018. However, he added that there are a lot of hurdles that the company needs to overcome before making this smartphone available in the market – foldable phones were a rage, but that was as long as a decade ago .

“As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year,” Koh told reporters while adding, “When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product.” As per the report, Samsung has been working on this idea for a while now. It had first showcased a flexible display prototype called Youm in 2013. Over the last few months, Samsung filed a number of patents for a smartphone that could fold into half.

However, Koh didn’t mention what these problems are. AP quoted analysts saying that mass-producing a foldable phone with top tech features and a thin body will take time. Koh also said the company is working with auto-systems maker Harman to develop an artificial intelligence-enabled speaker that users can speak to in order to play music and conduct other tasks.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Samsung isn’t the only company that is working on these foldable smartphones. China’s Lenovo has recently showcased a working prototype of a concept tablet that when folded, turns into a two display smartphone, the Folio. Meanwhile, ZTE is another company which is reportedly working on a dual-screen, 6.8-inch foldable smartphone. The dual-screen smartphone is likely to be called the Axon Multy, and the launch might happen later this month.
