SSHD is mixes the best of HDD and SSD technologies. SSHDs deliver speedy performance of an SSD and have a good data storage capacity and reliability like that of an HDD, all at an affordable price. Rajesh Khurana – Country Manager for South Asia (India & SAARC, ASEAN), Seagate Technology explains:
SSHDs have been available for a while, but are you expecting a big uptake with Windows 10 devices.
Windows 10 has lots of positive reviews from reviewers and has interesting changes including Windows Hello, Cortana, cross-platform apps and flexible user interface. Being the first to ship client and enterprise hybrid products, Seagate’s 4th generation hybrid products are getting strong market acceptance. Seagate believes that the Seagate hybrid drive will continue to see strong support from the industry’s major OEMs with Windows 10 as it bridges the gap between a HDD and SSD and is the best value/ performance option for users.
What is the size, weight advantage that SSHDs offer?
Seagate’s SSHD for laptop devices offers the speed users want and the capacity they need in a thin and light design. Seagate Laptop Thin SSHD and Seagate Ultra Mobile SSHD come in 7mm and 5mm height respectively, designed for the thinnest and lightest laptops in the industry.
These drives are the thinnest laptop drive options in the market. They can be integrated into ultra-thin, lightweight mobile computing devices while delivering high capacity storage at an affordable price. The drives’ 500GB capacity, coupled with its slim, lightweight footprint, empowers our OEM partners to think out of the box and create innovative system designs. Seagate Laptop Thin SSHD is 7mm thin and weighs 95g.
Seagate Ultra Mobile SSHD is just 5mm thin and weighs a mere 93g. This makes it about as thin as four stacked credit cards and lighter than a deck of cards. It delivers up to 500GB of capacity in 25 percent less space than the 7mm drive, freeing up valuable real-estate within portable devices to accommodate additional designed-in features such as longer-life batteries and better air circulation. These svelte high-capacity hybrid drives can support over 100,000 photos, 125,000 songs or 62 hours of high-definition video.
What percentage of new storage in notebooks are now SSHD? What is the outlook?
We announced that we have achieved the major milestone of shipping 19 millionth hybrid drives. Demand for Seagate’s SSHD has risen significantly over the last three years, as it offers the speed of an SSD in combination with industry-leading highest storage capacities.
Seagate is an original pioneer of hybrid drive technology, and is the first to offer the technology for both client and enterprise segments. We also believe that hybrid technology is the future of next- gen storage. With strong support from the industry’s major OEMs, the technology has become a major part of the storage solutions offered and will continue to grow significantly.
