Bharti Airtel has taken the competition to Reliance Jio, and that has given consumers more choice. Two months ago Reliance Jio had announced the launch of its 4G feature phone to tap low-end users, effectively free of cost. Meanwhile, Airtel on Wednesday launched a 4G smartphone for the same segment of users effectively priced at Rs 1,399. Bharti has partnered domestic handset manufacturer Karbonn Mobiles to bring this initiative which it calls smartphone at the price of a feature phone.
The crucial difference between the Jio Phone and Airtel Karbonn mobile is that consumers will not have to return the handset at the end of 36 months for the latter, to get their money back. The other difference between the JioPhone and Bharti offers is that while the former is locked, which means it will work only with a Jio connection and Jio apps. In the Airtel Android phone, there is no such restriction as it is on an open network. However, the offers by Airtel only work when the user sticks to the same network. Apart from these obvious differences, here is a full list of comparisons between the mobiles:
Reliance Jio vs Airtel Karbonn 4G mobile: Pricing/ Recharge options
Airtel: Consumers buying it would have to make a down payment of Rs 2,899 against its current price of Rs 3,499. The way the scheme works is that consumers would have to top it up with a monthly prepaid pack of Rs 169 which would come with 500 MB of data every month while domestic calls would be free. If the phone is continuously charged for 18 months for a minimum of Rs 169, consumers would get a cashback of Rs 500 and of another Rs 1,000 if it is continuously charged for 36 months. This way, the effective price of the phone comes down to Rs 1,399. The validity period for the Airtel Rs 169 plan is 14 days.
Reliance Jio: The upfront payment for Jio phone is Rs 1,500 and minimum monthly recharge of Rs 153 is to be made for 36 months. Against this, consumers get to make free calls and 500 MB data every month. After 3 years, if your JioPhone is in a working condition you can return it within three months after the period ends. Doing this can get you the refund. Jio has a monthly Rs 153 recharge plan, and also sachet vouchers like Rs 24 and Rs 54. The validity period of the Rs 153 plan is 28 days.
