One might consider it a certain level of paranoia, yet according to FBI director and even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, covering your webcam with a tape is not such a bad idea. FBI Director James Comey defended the use of tape to cover devices. According to Comey, putting a piece of tape over the webcam of personal laptops claimed that the security step was ‘common sense’. During a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Comey said, “There are a few sensible things one should be doing, and this is one of them.” He defended his earlier statements for the use of webcam covering tapes by saying, “I get mocked for a lot of things including that, but I hope as people lock their cars and doors at night. I have an alarm system too. If one has an alarm system one should use it, I use mine. It’s not crazy that the FBI Director cares about personal security as well.”

Comey added that “I think people ought to be taking personal responsibility for their own safety and security.” He explained that it was common practice at government offices and even the use physical covers over webcams.” There were many sceptics to this who believed this to be ironic as Comey recently made fights into the high-profile case against Apple with an aim to gain data access from the iPhone used by one of the terrorists. People went against this by arguing that this move would be a referendum on digital privacy. This conference was on the growing concerns regarding the internet of things and the debate surrounding its convenience and security breaches. Recently in an Instagram picture of Mark Zuckerberg, it was found that he covers the camera and the audio jack on his Macbook with pieces of tape.
