While speaking to on Reliance Jio services, company Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said that Reliance Jio superior technology denied to customers due to the anti-competitive behaviour of incumbent operators. Ambani said, “While customers have shown unprecedented love for Jio, we have not received the required support from existing operators. He informed that in the last 3 months, almost 900 crore voice calls from Jio to the networks of 3 largest competitors were blocked.” Ambani, however, said, “Through all this, Jio has been a tireless champion for Indian customers and their right to #freevoice services.”

These statements add fuel to the ongoing fire between Reliance Jio Infocomm and incumbent operators Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular which had recently landed before the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Sources in the regulatory body had earlier told FE that Jio had filed a complaint against the three incumbent operators and alleged that they have been abusing their dominant market power and formed a ‘cartel of sorts’, denying it the requisite number of points of interconnect (PoIs), leading to a high number of call failures that is inconveniencing its customers.

During the speech, Mukesh Ambani informed that over the past months, the call block rate has come down from over 90% to nearly 20% as of yesterday. Ambani said, “I want to reiterate that Jio is committed to ensuring that all domestic voice calls by Jio customers will be free forever. I am happy to inform that Jio now fully supports mobile number portability, and all customers can retain their existing number when they migrate to Jio.”

Reliance Jio through its Welcome offer provides its users with unlimited voice and video calling, SMS and data, for free every day. A TRAI order had earlier said that the offer by Jio 4G should have ended by December 4, even the old customers will get added benefits till March 31, 2017. After Jio’s entry in the market, it reached the landmark of 50 million customers in just 83 days, even as other networks took years to reach it. While Vodafone took 13 years, Airtel achieved it in 12 years. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio which launched in September already had 16 million customers in the first month itself. Cellular association COAI has reported that altogether Vodafone had 201.9 million customers in October while Bharti Airtel had 262.67 million and Idea Cellular had 180.25.

The company has reportedly become the country’s biggest operator to provide digital services with the highest number of mobile broadband users. It is even larger than Airtel’s 41 million 3G and 4G subscribers which it had acquired in 6 years. When it comes to just 4G, Jio user base is 5 times the base of Airtel and a whopping 17 times of Idea.
