Reliance Jio, hailed as the next big thing in the world of telecom, is actually the slowest network among incumbents like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Reliance itself. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has had recently launched an analytics portal called ‘My Speed Portal’, and according to its data, Reliance Jio 4G gives users a connection slower than other network providers. When you enter Reliance Jio in the operator section of the speed test portal, the ‘download’ speed presented is 6.2 Mbps. When it comes to other providers, Airtel ranks first in the list with a 4G speed of 11.4 megabits per second (Mbps). That speed is followed by Reliance with 7.93 Mbps, Idea with 7.63 Mbps and Vodafone with 7.3 Mbps.
When it comes to ‘upload’ speed, it is not too much as well. Idea scores highest with 4.1 Mbps, followed by Vodafone and Airtel at 4.0 Mbps and 3.7 Mbps respectively. Jio has a lowly 2.4 Mbps upload speed. The TRAI portal also shows speeds based on states. Interestingly Jammu and Kashmir scores the highest for Reliance JIO, with a speed of 11.17 Mbps, while Kerala is at the bottom with 1.4 Mbps only. The portal is very accurate, even when it comes to searching speeds at specific locations, and it varies within a few kilometre’s difference.
In a recent report, in Medium, Ookla studies showed that Reliance Jio 4G speeds have gone down since its inception. Meanwhile, there have been reports that Reliance has denied the reports and the data by TRAI, accusing it of ‘inherent bias’ on their part, saying that the speeds are being measured after users exhaust their daily limit of data when the speed gets lower.
