Even as the government is working on tightening rules and regulations to check leakages and theft of data, the ministry of electronics and IT (MeitY) is yet to come up with a complete list of all the handset manufacturers and assemblers in the country. Earlier this month, MeitY sent notices to 21 handset manufacturers, which was followed by another round to 9 mobile phone companies last week. The ministry has asked these firms to outline their security procedures and protocols to ensure safety and privacy of user’s data.
A source told FE that the ministry does not have the complete list and hence it is sending notices to companies as and when it gets the information about these firms. “This is the reason that the first notice went to 21 companies followed by another to 9 firms. The ministry is also in the process of sending more notices to some other handset makers such as the smartphone brand Lyf,” the source added.
