Stung by the high airfares in the Kerala-Gulf segment, the Kerala government is considering operating passenger ships from West Asian countries to ferry expatriates to their home state during the peak travel season. CM Oommen Chandy confirmed in the Kerala assembly on Wednesday that the state government was serious on going ahead with this proposal.

“This has been a desperate measure, since there has been no response from the central government when I presented the issue of high airfare to the ministry of civil aviation. The issue was also brought to the attention of the Air India top brass. In any case, the state has decided to work on operating ships from the Gulf to Kerala,” Chandy said.
