Fresh rejig at Flipkart; Sachin Bansal says honchos’ accountability fixed

Flipkart chairman Sachin Bansal on Friday said the e-commerce major has undertaken a new round of management changes so as to establish clear accountability among its top leadership team.

Flipkart chairman Sachin Bansal on Friday said the e-commerce major has undertaken a new round of management changes so as to establish clear accountability among its top leadership team.

“Binny Bansal (CEO) is looking to organise Flipkart in a way that there is a clear accountability among leaders. The management changes were announced so that responsibilities were divided,” Bansal said, while attending an investor meet here.

Flipkart has reshuffled the roles internally by expanding the scope of responsibilities of its key executives as it looks to retain its dominance in a market which has shown signs of a slowdown.

Kalyan Krishnamurthy, who is the representative from Tiger Global, one of the largest investors in Flipkart, will now be in charge of the marketplace, retail and advertising business of the e-commerce major.

Saikiran Krishnamurthy, who is heading logistics business — Ekart — has been given the additional responsibility of marketplace and retail business.

The chief people officer, Nitin Seth, will become the chief administrative officer who will oversee strategy, analytics and planning. Ravi Garikipati will now the lead the engineering team as the two current executives — Hari Vasudev and Peeyush Ranjan — have moved to its recently opened US office.

These four key executives – Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Saikiran Krishnamurthy, Garikipati and Seth — will report to chief executive officer Binny Bansal.

Sameer Nigam, who leads Flipkart’s payments arm PhonePe, and Ananth Narayanan, CEO of Flipkart-owned online fashion retailers Myntra and Jabong, will also continue to report to Bansal.

The Flipkart chairman said that they were creating a merit based organisation. “We believe that in a merit based organisation, performance applies to everyone including the founders,” he remarked on Friday. Sachin Bansal, during a recent townhall meeting with the employees, had candidly admitted that he had to move on the from position of CEO as his performance did not meet the expected mark.
