Text and video chat app Skype, now owned by Microsoft Corporation, has secured an Indian patent for an invention relating to a system and method for minimising the load on a message server, which in turn could facilitate faster communication.

The invention for which a patent protection has been granted revolves around a message delivery system as well as method for delivering messages to a computing system.

The system uses a message ID structure as well as a message ID database to allow a user to check whether he or she is recipient of a new message without having to contact the message server that holds messages to be delivered.

Skype filed the patent application titled System for delivering messages in a communication system at the Delhi patent office, in 2008 and after having satisfied with the written submission post hearing, Ajay Singh Meena, assistant controller of patent & designs, granted the patent, in an order recently.

The company argued that inventive method provides a technical contribution of minimising the load on the message server by enabling querying of the message ID database rather than the message server. Thus, the message server is involved only in receiving and delivering messages, and not in handling frequent user queries. The reduction in the load on the message server facilitates faster communication.

According to Skype, the method provides a way of announcing that a message is ready for retrieval from a message server.
