Samsung packs more devices into best-selling J series

Riding high on the success of its budget J series, the Samsung on Monday launched its latest J7 Prime and J5 Prime smartphones in India.

Riding high on the success of its budget J series, the Samsung on Monday launched its latest J7 Prime and J5 Prime smartphones in India.

Manu Sharma, vice-president, mobiles business, Samsung Electronics India said, “Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime is already available in the market and we are getting a great response. Customers are willing to upgrade to the J Prime series from the older J series smartphones. The J7 Prime and J5 Prime would be the largest selling devices in the mid-budget segment.”

With the close to Rs 20,000 pricing, Samsung is inching closer to it’s mid-budget A series here. However, Sharma says the J Prime series is below the company’s A series which mostly consists of devices starting close to Rs 20,000.

“When it comes to styling, the J Prime devices have metal unibody design, fingerprint sensor and more powerful hardware. The A series consists of smartphones that are built of metal and glass, used in our flagship series. The J7 Prime and J5 Prime are a notch below company’s A series and a notch above the J series,” said Manu.

When asked if Samsung plans to introduce an SOS button/app soon, he said, “We already have some features of the SOS app. As per government mandate, a panic button is mandatory for all smartphones from January 1, 2017. We’re going to be ready with that by then.”

“Samsung’s J series comprises of several models starting at Rs 7,500 and going all the way up to Rs 20,000. The reason we’re shifting the pricing slightly higher for our J series is because Rs 10,000-R20,000 price segment is the fastest growing segment. Clearly, there are customers who are looking at top class design, metal unibody etc. The new smartphones compliment our portfolio,” Manu said.

Samsung does not see the entry of Chinese players in the Indian smartphone market as a threat. While devices like Redmi Note 3 and leEco Le 1s offer features like fingerprint scanner, full HD display and metal unibody at close to Rs 10,000; Manu says customers get a brand value attached to Samsung smartphones.
