With the festive sale season kicking in, e-commerce majors Flipkart and Amazon are at loggerheads on who actually managed to lead the market. With their biggest sales just concluding, Flipkart has had a lead with 15.5 million units over Amazon India’s 15 million. And with this, Flipkart mocked Amazon for selling ‘hing and churan’.
However, as per ET, Amazon India’s CEO Amit Agarwal has resorted back to the comment by saying that “People not only bought.. mobile phones, upgrading through an exchange offer or the appliance that they could not get access to in their city or a TV… or furniture they couldn’t or the home appliance or the fashion they were looking to buy but they also bought churan and hing.”
Agarwal enforced the point that people are nowadays switching to e-commerce for everyday things. He said that the focus is not only on mobile phones anymore. ”That is the path e-commerce in India wants and not just the path of selling mobile phones only”, Agarwal hit back at the Flipkart CEO Binny Bansal’s comment.
”It took Amazon just three years to reach where incumbents have taken 10+ years and multiple acquisitions to reach.” Agarwal said.
Amazon, as it is is now venturing into grocery shopping as well and wants to cash on the opportunity big time. And rebutting Flipkart’s claims, the Amazon CEO claims their site is the number one and not just in sales but in credibility and efficiency.
