Around 900 members of the Christian community staged a protest here on Saturday to vent their ire over ‘degrading’ content against the Catholic Church, broadcast by a regional television channel.

A guest in a Tamil talk show made derogatory remarks against the Coimbatore Bishop, Thomas Aquanus, and diocesan priest and nuns.

The show was telecast on June 15 and 16 without clarifying and verifying the facts.

Members of the diocese, including nuns, laypersons and priests, gathered at St. Michael’s Church and protested peacefully, raising slogans and demanding investigation into the channel and its content.

“We are condemning certain false news that was telecasted on June 15 and 16. Those news infuriated the entire mass of the Catholic Church. Therefore, together the priest, the religious and the laity we called for this agitation against the particular TV (channel), Z Tamil,” said Vicar General of Coimbatore, Reverend Fr. John Joseph Stanis.

Stanis also said they would file a defamation case against the channel.

As per reports, the Bishop House also said that the protest against the channel would intensify across India if they continued to target minorities.
