Volkswagen Ameo will be the new sub-compact sedan from the German automaker for the Indian market. The company has also confirmed that the Ameo will make its global debut on 2nd February – a day before Auto Expo 2016. Similar to the Vento and the Polo hatchback, production of this compact sedan will take place at the manufacturer’s Chakan plant, near Pune.
Volkswagen claims that the Ameo combines the brand values of best-in-class build quality, safety features and superb driving experience. Upon its launch in India, the Volkswagen Ameo will lock horns with products like Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest.
Engine Specs & Mileage
VW’s upcoming sub-compact sedan is likely to share engines with the Polo hatchback – i.e. a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder MPI petrol and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel. With the hatchback, the petrol unit generates power worth of 74bhp against 110Nm of torque. While the diesel motor churns out a peak power of 88.7bhp and 230Nm of torque.
Transmission on offer could be a 5-speed manual. Though, the company might also introduce a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder TSI petrol engined model with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The Volkswagen Ameo is expected to return fuel efficiency equivalent to the Polo hatchback, as both the vehicles share engines. The petrol version is likely to offer a mileage around 16kmpl, while the diesel model could deliver 20kmpl.
Exterior & Interior
Volkswagen’s new compact sedan is likely to share its platform, equipment and design bits with the Polo. On the front end, the car might feature headlamps and grille identical to its hatchback sibling. The interior, too, will share resemblance with the Polo. It might get a dual-tone black and beige interior and silver inserts here and there. Features like a 2 DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, a multifunction 3-spoke steering wheel, automatic climate control, dual airbags, ABS and EBD could be borrowed from the Vento.
With best-in-class safety features and efficient engine lineup, the Volkswagen Ameo could be slightly more expensive than its rivals like Maruti Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze. It might come within the price range of Rs. 5.50 lakh – Rs. 8 lakh (ex-showroom).
Expected Launch Date
Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan will make its world premiere on February 2, 2016 – a day ahead of the Auto Expo 2016. The launch will take place sometime in the first half of 2016.
