On the day 2 of the Auto Expo 2016, Maruti Suzuki India revealed a bunch of new products including the Ignis crossover concept. The product is based on the iM-4 concept that was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. To be launched during the festive season this year, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis will become one of the most affordable crossovers in the country. Similar to the S-Cross and the Baleno, the Maruti Ignis will also be sold through Nexa dealership.
Though the company didn’t say anything about its positioning, we expect it to be priced below the Maruti Vitara Brezza. However, the Ignis could be exclusively sold through Nexa dealerships unlike the Brezza.
The Maruti Ignis is built on Suzuki’s new-generation platform which was also showcased at the company’s pavilion at the Auto Expo. This new platform is claimed to be stiffer yet lighter than the platforms underpinning other Maruti Suzuki cars in India. The same platform also underpins the Baleno, which is about 100kg lighter than the Swift despite being bigger in dimensions.
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis looks quite close to the iM-4 concept with features such as chromed single-slat grille, projector headlamps with U shaped LED strip, high shoulder line, fog lamps with chrome surrounds, black multi-spoke alloy wheels, body-coloured wing mirrors with integrated turn-indicators, a slightly sloping roof line, rear mounted spoiler and a few more.
In terms of dimensions, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis looks quite compact with 3,700mm length, 1,660mm width, 1,595mm height and 2,435mm wheelbase. And since it’s a crossover, it offers a ground clearance of 180mm. While the global model comes in both 2WD and AWD options, we expect the India-bound version to only get 2WD option.
The Maruti Ignis version displayed at the Auto Expo also gets several advanced safety features like anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), 4 airbags, hill descent control, lane departure warning and few more, though there is no clarity if all these features will be offered upon its launch in India.
While the global model of the Ignis features a 1.25L DualJet petrol engine, the India-bound version could feature the 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine that also powers the Swift and Dzire. The diesel version could feature a 1.3-litre multijet unit of the Swift.
